She's a published author, New York State mentor, and NY State scholar recipient. Her book, "Mujeres Que se Atreven y Superan Límites 2: Historias de inspiración en Tiempos difíciles", is a testament to her commitment to inspiring others. A graduate of New York University with a Bachelor's in Applied Psychology and an Associate's honors degree from Nassau Community College, she works as a Community Specialist for OMH NYS Housing and a Creative Wellness artist. Her impactful work has been recognized in Texas, New York, and Long Island.

Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to working-class parents, Sammy's mother moved the family to the United States for a better life. He attended Walton High School in the Bronx and later served in the United States Navy during the Persian Gulf War. Returning to the Bronx, he joined the NYPD, serving for 26 years and retiring as a lieutenant. Sammy provided aid during the 9/11 attacks and now serves as President and founder of the Dominican Veterans of America, a nonprofit supporting Latino veterans and their families. Sammy is a proud father to two sons, Sammy Jr. and Kevin, raised in the Bronx's Morris Park neighborhood

An Ecuadorian immigrant to the U.S., has been a vital asset to her community in Patchogue. Constituting about 30% of the village's population, she served on the Community Development Agency and Zoning Board of Appeals before her recent appointment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Carrillo facilitated vaccinations for over 700 local residents, particularly helping the Hispanic community with translation. She battled the virus herself in 2021. For three years, she has been the Suffolk County Police Department's civilian liaison, mediating interactions with the Hispanic community. Carrillo also serves as an outreach director at St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church.
